Cisco 877W Integrated Services Router is offering a stunning level of security features all accessed and configured from a well designed management console packed to the gills with wizards. Setting up wireless access is a little more tricky as SDM fires up a separate interface for this function where you can elect to use bridging or routing. Some features require additional components to be running separately but small businesses and remote offices that want the best money can buy need look no further.

Cisco 871 Integrated Services Router improves overall network performance without making any quantitative measurements. For anyone unfamiliar with configuring Cisco products setting this up can be a daunting task. For certain features you’ll have to have a service contract with Cisco. For example if you want updated SDM software you have to have a service account. The unit is compact although it’s much larger than consumer devices like the Linksys RVS4000. Just be aware of this if space is at a premium.

This router offers broadband speeds and simplified management to small businesses, and enterprise small branch and teleworkers. The Cisco 880 Series provides firewall, content filtering, vpns, and wlans, at broadband speeds to small offices, easy deployment and centralized management features. It features Survivable Remote Site Telephony for teleworker and small branch voice. Other options include WAN connection with multiple access options. Overall the product is excellent with a good price.

Cisco launches ASR 9000 edge router

Cisco Systems Inc has launched a new edge router designed to improve Web speeds as more and more users have started downloading movies online with increasing access to the Internet with the use of mobile phones.The ASR 9000 edge router aims at providing six times the capacity of corresponding products from competitors like Juniper Networks Inc. Edge routers are placed at the periphery of a service provider’s network and closer to the actual user. The ASR 9000 will be available in six- and 10-slot versions. The starting price of the product is $80,000.

Cisco launches wireless router to meet home digital media needs

Cisco subsidiary Linksys has introduced a new wireless router, tailored to the needs of home digital media content especially high-def video. WRT610N is a simultaneous dual-N band wireless router that operates in both the 5GHz and 2.4GHz spectrums. Users can connect entertainment-oriented devices, such as media center extenders, audio players or personal video recorders via the wider 5GHz band. The 5GHz spectrum is recommended for such high-def content because it provides more than seven times the number of non-overlapping wireless channels, which means clearer transmissions for big media files piped across the wireless network.

BT Global to deploy Cisco equipment

BT Global Services has chosen to deploy equipment produced by network equipment titan Cisco Systems Inc. BT is to deploy the new Cisco ASR 100 series aggregation services routers after being involved in the testing of the product prior to its launch in March of this year. The routers will be deployed in BT Global Services’ major finance and enterprise markets for critical managed service applications, such as highly secure encryption and virtual private networks (VPN).

Cisco releases three router patches

Cisco Systems Inc. has made available three patches for their router products. According to the press release:

These patches are to fix bugs which are serious enough to crash Cisco products. One of the patches fixes denial of service bugs in the SSH software in the company’s Internetwork Operating System, apart from fixing a similar bug in their Cisco Service Control Engine. Another patch is for privilege escalation vulnerability in the company’s Voice Portal automated telephone customer service software.”
